Budleigh Salterton

Budleigh-Salterton-panorama
Budleigh Salterton is situated on the coast of East Devon in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The coastline forms the western most section of the historic Jurassic coast, and the cliffs on either side of the town are the unique red Devonian sandstone.

The beach which is formed of large pebbles extends for 2.5 miles, from Littleham Cove in the west and Otterhead in the east, where the River Otter meets the sea. Bathing is safe and the water clear. Families can relax here, with the beach side cafés, beach huts (which are available for hire by the day or week from the Tourist Information Centre) and the rocks at Ottermouth giving parents and children plenty to explore.

East Budleigh is commonly known as the heart of Raleigh Country, as the famed Elizabethan Sir Walter Raleigh was born here in the farm known as Hayes Barton. His family settled here in 1537, and his father was warden of the Church of All Saints where the Raleigh pew stands on the left side of the knave with the date 1537.

Budleigh Salterton was made famous by a painting by Sir John Everett Millais called ‘The Boyhood of Raleigh’ which was painted from the Octagon, in Fore Street, an ancient wall that is featured in the painting’s background. Today this ancient wall bears a blue plaque to commemorate the place captured by the artist.
