Wolf Hall, Hilary Mantel’s novel about the machinations of Thomas Cromwell in the court of Henry VIII is the hottest favourite for the Booker prize. Mantel, 57, has never been a serious contender for the Booker before (she has been longlisted previously) but within 48 hours of this year’s longlist being announced, she jumped from being an outsider to the 2-1 favourite.

Book Fair
Budleigh Salterton Masonic Hall is the venue for the first Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival Book Fair, on Sunday 20th September. The Fair will be open from 10am until 5pm.

With speakers such as Michael Foreman and Michael Morpurgo featuring at this exciting new Festival, there will also be a wealth of collectable Children’s Literature on offer.
Who can forget ‘Black Bob’ the ‘Dandy Wonder Dog’? Three different Black Bob Annuals from the 1950’s will be on Colin Baker’s stand priced at £12 and £14. Alongside them, for those who fondly remember the little Bear of Nutwood, will be some collectable ‘Rupert’ Annuals in excellent condition; the 1949 Annual is £60, 1952 £40 and 1955 £38.
A large collection of Books illustrated by Michael Foreman, who is speaking at the Festival on the same day, should attract interest with prices from as little as £5.
A very nice copy of his autobiography ‘The Enchanted Places’ signed by the late Christopher Robin Milne, asks £20.
Part of the Festival will be devoted to ‘An Evening with Hilaire Belloc’ and those seeking more information about this delightful ‘foolish passionate man’ will find a first edition of A N Wilson’s masterful biography ‘Hilaire Belloc’ at the Fair for £8.
Another, arguably, flawed genius was Eric Gill and books about this remarkable man are always popular. ‘Eric Gill The Sculpture’ by Judith Collins is the first ever complete survey of Gill’s figural sculpture and this fine copy of 1998 with 350 photographs is available here for £35.
In 1765 Benjamin Donn published his Survey and map of the County of Devon and copies of the original generally change hands for four figures nowadays. 200 years later, however, the Devon & Cornwall Record Society and the University of Exeter, published a facsimile edition. A copy of this 1965 tome in its Dustwrapper is here, offered at £25.
Rather more frivolous is ‘”Snaffles” The Life and Work of Charlie Johnson Payne 1884-1967’ by Welcome and Collens. This splendid book lavishly illustrated in colour and black and white, is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest sporting and military artists of his time and will cost £35.
There will be fun and laughs aplenty at this new Literary Festival and what could be more fun than a book by Beryl Cook? Well there will be at least two here, ‘Cruising’ a First Edition 2000 at £12 and a rather less well known book published 20 years earlier in 1980 ‘Seven Years and a Day’, a children’s story by Collette O’Hare with colour illustrations, on every page, by Beryl Cook. This is priced at £20.
For sheer lunacy however, the infamous ‘The Brand New Monty Python Bok’ is unsurpassed. A First Edition in its innocuous Dustwrapper is on Colin Baker’s stand at £15 – but who knows what lurks beneath this bland exterior??
There will be a special showing of the film ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ on Sunday Evening and the presenter Nigel Cozens of Lymelight Books, will have a stand at the Book Fair with a good selection of John Fowles First Editions, including some signed copies.
The Quintet
An innovative and fascinating session involving five local distinguished authors and speakers talking about their work with illustrations.
Sean Day-Lewis, Professor Alan Emery, Ralph Feltham, Sir Keith Sykes and Dan Jacobson.
Sean Day-Lewis will be speaking about his father Cecil Day-Lewis.

The Guardian | Saturday Interview: Hilary Mantel
‘I accumulated an anger that would rip a roof off’: Author Hilary Mantel has resisted shallow interpretations of her macabre work as domestic novels. Now her latest pitch-dark novel is the favourite to win the Booker prize
The Guardian – 12.09.2009
There is an anecdote Hilary Mantel tells, about herself at six, and “a little girl in my class putting her hand up and saying, ‘Miss! My mother says there’s no such person as the devil.’ And I remember thinking through all sides of the question. I thought: her mother’s told her that because she’s having nightmares. And Miss doesn’t know what to say! Because how can she say, ‘Your mother was wrong’? It was the most delicious moment.”
Her large pale eyes look intent, and mischievous. “But of course, I did myself believe in the devil. I just thought I was made of stronger stuff than that little girl.” Read more
Coastline is an irresisitible lure to line-up of writers
Sue Lawley – Western Morning News 15.08.2009
Budleigh Salterton, one of the jewels of Britain’s only World Heritage Site, sits on a coastline of great beauty which dates back 180 million years. But now its worldwide reputation may come to depend on something more than its splendid situation – its taste for literature.
Our coastline may be Jurassic – but Budleigh Salterton’s first literary festival, to be staged this autumn, is very much of the 21st century. We’ve called it Writing By The Sea – a notion that a lot of people appear to find attractive. Not least, I’m delighted to say, a number of talented writers who’ve accepted our invitation to attend.
The list is enough to make any bookworm squirm with delight – from crime-writer Val McDermid, author of Wire In The Blood, to Michael Morpurgo, the former Children’s Laureate; from Simon Brett, creator of Radio 4’s After Henry, to Sarah Harrison, who’ll be telling us How To Write A Blockbuster. HRF Keating at Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival
H R F Keating, author of the best-loved Inspector Ghote series, will be speaking at the first ever Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival, running from the 18th – 20th September. Keating is part of an impressive line-up of authors including Hilary Mantel, Simon Brett, Michael Mopurgo, Val McDermid and many more. He will be talking about his work, including his latest release A Small Case for Inspector Ghote?.

This is Budleigh Salterton's second literary festival.
