David Hare, The Blue Touch Paper

One of Britain’s finest dramatists, David Hare has written a wealth of material for theatre, film and television. Seventeen of his twenty-nine plays have premiered at the National Theatre including Plenty, Skylight, The Secret Rapture, Racing Demon, A Map of The World and The Absence of War. His acclaimed screenplays for film and television include The Hours, Damage, Licking Hitler and The Reader. He was knighted in 1998 and has received a multitude of awards including a BAFTA, a Berlin Film Festival Golden Bear, two Laurence Olivier Awards and the PEN Pinter Prize.

We’re delighted David is coming to Budleigh to talk about the first volume of his long awaited memoir, The Blue Touch Paper. Chronicling the years 1947 – 1979, The Blue Touch Paper focuses on his childhood in suburban Sussex, his Anglo-Catholic education, his painful apprenticeship as a dramatist and the radical changes he witnessed around him from the hierarchy to Margaret Thatcher coming to power. Written with great insight and humour, it shows how these changes and experiences have shaped and informed his life and work.

David will be in conversation with author and Observer writer Rachel Cooke.
