Margaret Drabble, The Pure Gold Baby

One of the grand dames of modern literature, Margaret Drabble was born in Sheffield and educated at Newham College, Cambridge. She is the author of eighteen novels including A Summer Bird-Cage, The Millstone, The Peppered Moth and The Radiant Way. She has also written biographies, screenplays and the short story collection, A Day in the Life of a Smiling Woman. A magnificent storyteller, she was awarded the 2011 Golden PEN Award for a Lifetime’s Distinguished Service to Literature.

Margaret’s latest novel, The Pure Gold Baby, is a profound and life-affirming story of family, friendship, community, motherhood and transformation. Spanning several decades of dramatic change, it’s also a wise and powerful portrait of modern life and our shifting attitudes and responsibilities towards each other. Sadie Jones described The Pure Gold Baby as ‘extraordinary and intriguing’ whilst Alice Sebald called it ‘an unexpected gift from a great writer.’

Margaret will be in conversation with Carol Ackroyd.
