Sarah Winman, author, A Year of Marvellous Ways, literary festival, budleigh salterton, budlitfest, devon,

One of Britain’s most promising young writers, Sarah Winman published her debut novel, When God Was a Rabbit, in 2011. An instant Sunday Times bestseller in hardback and paperback, it received widespread critical acclaim and went on to be published in 26 countries. The Guardian called it ‘sharply funny, whimsical and innovative’ whilst Red described it as ‘a wonderful coming-of-age story… each character is created with a sense of depth and feeling that draws you in wholeheartedly.’

Sarah’s new novel, A Year of Marvellous Ways, is an equally rich and captivating tale. Set in the wilds of Cornwall in the aftermath of the Second World War, it chronicles the unlikely friendship between an old woman coming to the end of her life and a young soldier who sees little point in going on with his. Championed by fellow authors Patrick Gale, Rosamund Lupton and Emylia Hall, A Year of Marvellous Ways is a truly life-affirming tale of love, death, landscape, storytelling and sloe gin. To quote Emma Hooper, it’s ‘A book to savour, to read in wonderful, rich little bits like dark chocolate. Winman’s prose is poetry, with a rhythm, a heartbeat, that carries you through like music.’

A former theatre, film and television actor, Sarah will be in conversation with fellow author and journalist Erica Wagner.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Liza Klaussmann is no longer able to appear at Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival on Saturday 19th September.

We are delighted that author Sarah Winman has agreed to step in.

Tickets can be booked online or from the Tourist Information Centre: 01395 445275
